Madeira 18th – 22nd June 2019

with Alan Lewis, Pete Morris, Barry Wright, Barry Reed, Steve Webb, Simon King and Richard Newton

The target of this trip was to see the 2 endemic landbirds along with 3 pelagics trips to see Zino’s and Desertas Petrels. The boat trips were with Madeira Wild Birds, other than the pterodromas we also saw 2 Barolos, 1 Great, 100’s Corys and a few Manx Shearwaters, White-faced Storm and Bulwer’s Petrels along with 3 Sperm Whales, Short-finned Pilot Whales and Common Dolphins. I also found a vagrant Little Swift, very few island records it seems.  We spent a lot of time searching for the endemic race of Barn Owl which we eventually saw.  Butterflies included Madeiran Grayling, Clouded Yellow, Lang’s Short-tailed Blue, Madeiran Speckled Wood and a few Monarch’s. We saw a grand total of  36 species of bird, my ebird list is at ebird.org/MyEBird
